LAGOS FOOD SECURITY SYSTEM & LOGISTICS HUB | Largest Food & Logistics Hub In Africa
On the 24th of August 2022, the Lagos state Governor Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu performed the groundbreaking ceremony of the Lagos central food security system & logistics hub at ketu-Ereyun, Epe.
In April 2021, the Governor launched the 5 year Agricultural & food systems road map (2021-2025). The objective of the road map is to achieve synergy in all food systems across the state, from production to processing, distribution, preservation in a wholesome way.
The annual value of food transaction in Lagos is estimated at $10 billions, however farmers lose 40% of this produce every day because there is no post harvest storage infrastructure.
Presently civil works are on going on site. When completed, the logistics hub is expected to provide direct income to more than 5 million traders in the agricultural value chain while ensuring uninterrupted food supply to lagosians for a minimum of 90 days in times of scarcity.
The central food hub is expected to secure higher returns for farmers and agro business investors, cut out a number of middlemen and improve access to sophisticated processing and packaging services.
The choice of location was significant for the project. Located in Epe, which can be sighted when driving from Epe to Ikorodu given its proximity to farming communities. The hub will connect farmers in Lagos, the south west and other parts of the country to a direct market to sell their produce.
The Lagos food security systems and central logistics hub will be built on 1.2 million square meters of land and it is a private sector driven project which will have he following:
- Aggregation and storage facilities
- Administration offices
- Trading/brokering facilities
- packaging facilities
- processing facilities
- cold chain and dry goods services
- logistics service and trailer park
- water treatment plant
- Health center
- Fuel station and fire station
- Abattoir
The food security hub will create wealth for more than 5 million people,feed more than 10 million lagosians, provide food for at least 90 days, storage facilities for more than 1500 trucks per day to service thousands of operators per annum and also process large transactions.
The project will ensure the highest consideration for consumer protection also specialized logistics and centralized procurement systems on a produce-by-produce basis shall be the major operational system within the hub.
The hub will help generate useful data for government agencies, private sector actors and international organizations.
The project is expected to be completed by fourth quarter of 2024.
