Varieties of Residential Dwellings in Nigeria by Dennis Isong

Nigeria boasts a distinct and diverse architectural tapestry that sets it apart from other nations. The spectrum of homes in Nigeria is a fascinating combination of styles, each resonating with its unique charm and reflecting the rich tapestry of cultural influences and geographical nuances across the country. From the northern reaches to the southern coasts, homes in Nigeria exhibit a splendid array of styles, configurations, and aesthetics, catering to individual preferences and regional contexts.

While the passage of time may have relegated certain housing styles to the annals of history, the quest to discover a place of belonging remains paramount. Amidst this evolution, the notion of ‘home’ remains a steadfast cornerstone, an abode that encapsulates not only bricks and mortar but also emotions, memories, and a sense of identity.

Intriguingly, the architectural chronicle of Nigeria encompasses a medley of house types that traverse eras and influences.

Let’s embark on a journey to explore these common house types, each bearing a distinctive narrative that contributes to the vibrant mosaic of Nigeria’s architectural heritage.

1. WODDEN HOUSE

In the sprawling city of Lagos, there exist remarkable slums where resourcefulness and necessity have given rise to an extraordinary way of life. These slums, nestled upon the water’s edge, boast houses ingeniously crafted predominantly from wood. A captivating blend of resilience and adaptability has led to the creation of these buoyant abodes, each forming a distinctive part of the urban fabric. Despite the challenges presented by their aquatic environment, these settlements are home to a vibrant and tenacious population that has defied the odds to establish a community unlike any other.

2. BUNGALOW

A bungalow is a low house having only one-storey. Bungalows are generally small in size. It can be detached or semi-detached. Recently, you can find bungalows that are very large combining both technology and splendid architecture, to cater for the more urban lifestyles of the present age.

It’s a very common house type in Nigeria because it’s quite affordable to build and maintain compared to others. Also, it cuts across several neighborhoods in Nigeria.

3. DUPLEXES

A duplex is a residential building divided into two apartments. This involves the inclusion of two-storey houses having a complete apartment on each floor and also side-by-side apartments on a single lot that share a common wall.

Quite a number of duplexes can be found in high-brow areas in every state in Nigeria. But a lot is common in Lagos and Abuja.

4. TOWNHOUSES( TERRACES)

A townhouse refers to units that look like a detached home, which are attached in a multi-unit complex. In summary, townhouses have identical homes joined into a row of houses.

They are commonly found in estates in Nigeria as well as private and government-powered housing schemes.

5. MANSION

A mansion is a large impressive house. This is not common because only wealthy people with a lavish taste can afford to pull that off. Real estate agents consider mansions to be houses that have a minimum of 8,000 square feet of floor space.

A mansion is expected to have entertainment facilities, dedicated leisure space, lavish grounds as well as outstanding building materials and finishes. So, things like grand staircases, crystal chandeliers, big open foyers, massive gardens, swimming pools, tennis courts, home automation and various other high-end amenities, number of rooms and bathrooms are what sum up a mansion.

6. APARTMENTS OR FLATS

Apartments of flats are among the most popular forms of housing everywhere today. An apartment building is a combination of many separate homes stacked on top and next to each other. Each apartment is in its own individual dwelling space.

The popularity of flats has increased in Nigeria, as the population has become more urban in nature.
